6.7.3.4: Manage Vehicle Traffic Rules

This process shall request and receive traffic rule or regulation information from Manage Traffic Rules, Manage Emergency Services, or Manage Maintenance and Construction or directly from the Determine Roadside Emergent Traffic Regulations function. Upon receipt of new traffic rules this process shall perform completeness and consistency checks to ensure each rule is fully defined and to identify any conflicts or discrepancies among the received rules. It combines the currently relevant rules with supporting data (e.g., from on-board sensors or from exchanges with other vehicles) to develop a complete picture of the rules that are currently active. This process sends the valid rules to the Provide Driver Information Interface process for presentation to the driver and to accept inputs to accept or change conditions like the presence of a trailer from the driver. If discrepancies are detected, a discrepancy report is logged and transmitted. The validated rules are then sent to the Provide Vehicle Control function to support driving functions. This may include indications to shut down the automated driving system (ADS) when an emergent traffic rule indicates that drivers must use manual control in order to follow situation-specific directions like hand signals from a police officer. In that situation this process will also inform the driver interface to make the driver aware. Discrepancies in traffic regulations provided by the driver shall be processed and sent to the appropriate METR system in the Manage Traffic Rules and Regulations function.
